New Bengal : A Vision

Today was a historic day for Bengal. After 34 years of continuous rule, the people of Bengal chose to dethrone CPM. This outcome has overjoyed many, saddened many, but most importantly this has jerked all the parties about the political sensitivity of the people. People are no longer just satisfied with the content of the pre-election manifestos, but they want work to be done, and they're pretty serious about it.

As for a majority class of middle-class people, they are very cautious. Neither too optimistic, nor very pessimistic. They want to give others a chance to play the game, rather than just letting them shout from the boundary-lines. It is very reassuring to see this attitude of the general public that they are ready even to compromise with their decade-old perceptions in the hope for a better tomorrow.

For the evolution of a species, change is inevitable, without which it loses its capability to strive in this world, where with time it becomes more and more difficult to exist. Some changes come automatically, some need a trigger, and some active actions. But, just as water flows freely from a higher altitude to a lower one, situations when left to themselves turns bad to worse. It always needs a positive force to push the things up.

Today, Bengal is in the doorstep of a big change. It is now in our hands where we want it to go. If TMC gets complacent of its formidable victory and takes too long to stop partying and start working, it's run will be cut short prematurely. It is important for them to take a proper grip of the steering, oil the rusty machinery and provide the necessary fuel & then ignite the spark. No doubt it will be a tedious, hard and long process, but every minute of effort will count in the long term. If Bengal can entrust a party for 3 decades, I'm sure (or at least hopeful) that they will have enough patience to wait for the reformed Bengal Machine to move.

However, as always, the chances of failure is very high. TMC can get busy gobbling up the Pie, forgetting that the original reason for their victory was not that most people wanted TMC to win, but many just wanted CPM to go. Only TMC gave a threat to the existence of CPM, hence they won easily, banking on the super-brand Mamata Banerjee, whose primary goal was to oust the ruling party at any cost. Throughout her political career, she has operated in the most challenging situations, and considered attack as the best defense. At every opportunity, she has made sure that CPM was duly embarrassed, punished and the whole act get well publicized. I admire her single-minded approach, persistence to the fighting spirit and also most of her strategies. A true warrior she is. But the problem is, a whole kingdom cannot be run only by the King in the smallest details. It needs a good team, intelligent strategists and some wise people. This is where TMC can face the biggest challenge.

Comparatively a new party, a conglomerate of floating politicians, intellectuals, popular figures and muscle-men, it is still lacking in the gluons that will hold the nucleus together. Party-men will have to temporarily forget about the party's sole welfare and think about the public to take some positive steps to keep them interested. They need to deliver short-term, plan for the long-term and always keep an eye on the clock, which always keeps ticking.

Other than this, there is an imminent possibility of a strong destructive opposition from CPM. Unlike a good opposition which criticizes for the betterment of the State and encounter probable injurious actions, a bad opposition can stop positive executions too and create a situation of a deadlock, where the public suffers eventually. TMC haven't been a very good opposition in this respect, and undertook many actions only to increase the count in their vote bank. On the other hand, CPM already having a strong base in the state, it won't require as much effort to win the counts back. It can cash-in heavily on every minute mistake that TMC in power may make. Here the challenge becomes even more difficult for the new ruling party. And I'm sure whenever CPM gets the next chance in administration, they will be very keen to deliver, which is the only guaranteed positive outcome of their defeat.

Like many people in Bengal, I dont really care who sits on the chair. I just want to see my state wake up from the long slumber, shake-off her chains and start to rise.

The idea of a party gulping the whole of Bengal is now fragile. People are now so sensitive that the balance can tilt any side, any time. Only sweet words will no more suffice to fill the Bengal Cerebrum, which has already accepted change as a part of Life. Now the question is, whether the parties accept it too.

একট ঘটনা মনে পড়ে। মনে হয় বন্ধু কুমকুম বলে ছিল। একটা ছোট মেয়ে খুব কান্নাকাটি করেছিল কেউ তার বন্ধু বা তাকে I love you বলাতে। লভ ব্যপারট এমন সেন্সিটিভ তখন; এখন মেয়েটি বড়, লভ মানে বড় হয়েছে আশা করা যায়। কদিন আগে ছোট্ট ফুটান আমাকে, দুজনে খেলায় মত্ত ছিলাম, বলে "I luv u". তোতা পাখী টিভি এড থেকে তুলেছে। কিন্তু আমি তো ফ্ল্যাট। ষাট বছরের জীবনে এই প্রথম শুনলাম, আমাকে কেঊ বলছে, হোক না মানে না জেনে বলা। আনন্দতে আমারো কাঁদতে ইচ্ছে করছিলো।

২০০৯ জুন ২৮ পোস্ট দিয়েছিল 'লাভ ইউ' . ওই সময়ের দূর্ঘটনা ও নিজেকে ভেবেই লিখেছিল বুধু। অসীমা মনে হয় এটা পড়ে নি। অসীমা অনেক আগে বলতো ছেলে মের বে হলেই চলে যাবে, ওর কিছু পেছু টান নেই। ওর অসীম অটল বিশ্বাসের গোপাল আর ভাগ্য। ভাগ্য বল আর গোপাল বলো অসীমার ছুটি মঞ্জুর হলো। কিন্তুক ছোট্ট ফুটান কে ফেলে ওর কি যেতে মন চেয়েছিলো? মনে হয় না, অর নরম মন। অসুখটা এতই কঠিণ ফেরার কোন রাস্তাই ছিল না ( ও জানতো)। কি ভয়ানক রসিকতা।
সার্থপর বুধুরও খুব সাধ চটপট চলে পড়ার। দেখা যাক।

My memories of her go back to times when I did not have a proper consciousness. But whatever I remember from the first day, I believe one thing that had never changed. Her warmth. Her hospitality, her words, even her smile. She carried an aura of simplicity, peace and warmth with her wherever she went.

The ever-calm mother-figure to all, she was the heart of the entire sanibasor group. I distinctly remember, whenever any situation would start to go out of control, it was her, always her, to put the first step forward and stand between the disturbed parties. Everyone have a deep respect for her, so inevitably the situation would be tuned down.Her occasional spontaneous songs, her laughter and her words have given life to many evenings which would have been meaningless without her.

Struck by many lightnings, not only she stood her ground gracefully, but also offered cool shadow and shelter to anyone in need. Like a huge banyan tree she held the umbrella over all, out in the rough weather herself, but always with a smile.

The last time I saw her, quite some time back, she was in full health and her usual self. I maybe very selfish to say this today: It is that memory that I will hold on to forever.

May she rest in peace.

Most modern Indian cities strive to rise above ethnicity. Tell anybody who lives in Bombay that he lives in a Maharashtrian city and (unless of course, you are speaking to Bal Thackeray) he will take immediate offence. We are cosmopolitan, he will say indigenously. Tell a Delhiwalla that his is a Punjabi city (which, in many ways, it is) and he will respond with much self-righteous nonsense about being the nation's capital, about the international composition of the city's elite etc. And tell a Bangalorean that he lives in a Kannadiga city and you'll get lots of techno-gaff about the internet revolution and about how Bangalore is even more cosmopolitan than Bombay.

But, the only way to understand what Calcutta is about, is to recognize that the city is essentially Bengali. What's more, no Bengali minds you saying that. Rather, he is proud of the fact. Calcutta's strengths and weaknesses mirror those of the Bengali character. It has the drawbacks: the sudden passions, the cheerful chaos, the utter contempt for mere commerce, the fiery response to the smallest provocation. And it has the strengths (actually, I think of the drawbacks as strengths in their own way). Calcutta embodies the Bengali love of culture; the triumph of intellectualism over greed; the complete transparency of all emotions, the disdain with which hypocrisy and insincerity are treated; the warmth of genuine humanity; and the supremacy of emotion over all other aspects of human existence.

That's why Calcutta is not for everyone. You want your cities clean and green; stick to Delhi. You want your cities, rich and impersonal, go to Bombay. You want them high-tech and full of draught beer, Bangalore's your place. But if you want a city with a soul, come to Calcutta.

When I look back on the years I've spent in Calcutta - and I come back so many times each year that I often feel I've never been away - I don't remember the things that people remember about cities. When I think of London, I think of the vast open spaces of Hyde Park. When I think of New York, I think of the frenzy of Times Square. When I think of Tokyo, I think of the bright lights of Shinjiku. And when I think of Paris, I think of the Champs Elysee. But when I think of Calcutta, I never think of any one place. I don't focus on the greenery of the maidan, the beauty of the Victoria Memorial, the bustle of Burra Bazar or the splendour of the new Howrah 'Bridge'. I think of people. Because, finally, a city is more than bricks and mortars, street lights and tarred roads. A city is the sum of its people. And who can ever forget -or replicate - the people of Calcutta?

When I first came to live here, I was told that the city would grow on me. What nobody told me was that the city would change my life. It was in Calcutta that I learnt about true warmth; about simple human decency; about love and friendship; about emotions and caring; about truth and honesty. I learnt other things too. Coming from Bombay as I did, it was a revelation to live in a city where people judged each other on the things that really mattered; where they recognized that being rich did not make you a better person - in fact, it might have the opposite effect. I learnt also that if life is about more than just money, it is about the things that other cities ignore; about culture, about ideas, about art, and about passion. In Bombay, a man with a relatively low income will salt some of it away for the day when he gets a stock market tip. In Calcutta, a man with exactly the same income will not know the difference between a debenture and a dividend. But he will spend his money on the things that matter. Each morning, he will read at least two newspapers and develop sharply etched views on the state of the world. Each evening, there will be fresh (ideally, fresh-water or river) fish on his table. His children will be encouraged to learn to dance or sing. His family will appreciate the power of poetry. And for him, religion and culture will be in inextricably bound together.

Ah religion! Tell outsiders about the importance of Puja in Calcutta and they'll scoff. Don't be silly, they'll say. Puja is a religious festival. And Bengal has voted for the CPM since 1977. How can godless Bengal be so hung up on a religions festival? I never know how to explain them that to a Bengali, religion consists of much more than shouting Jai Shri Ram or pulling down somebody's mosque. It has little to do with meaningless ritual orsinister political activity.The essence of Puja is that all the passions of Bengal converge: emotion, culture, the love of life, the warmth of being together, the joy of celebration, the pride inartistic ex-pression and yes, the cult of the goddess.

It may be about religion. But is about much more than just worship. In which other part of India would small, not particularly well-off localities, vie with each other to produce the best pandals? Where else could puja pandals go beyond religion to draw inspiration from everything else? In the years I lived in Calcutta, the pandals featured Amitabh Bachchan, Princes Diana and even Saddam Hussain! Where else would children cry with the sheer emotional power of Dashimi, upset that the Goddess had left their homes? Where else would the whole city gooseflesh when the dhakis first begin to beat their drums? Which other Indian festival - in any part of the country - is so much about food, about going from one roadside stall to another, following your nose as it trails the smells of cooking?

To understand Puja, you must understand Calcutta. And to understand Calcutta , you must understand the Bengali. It's not easy. Certainly, you can't do it till you come and live here, till you let Calcutta suffuse your being, invade your bloodstream and steal your soul. But once you have, you'll love Calcutta forever. Wherever you go,a bit of Calcutta will go with you. I know, because it's happened to me. And every Puja, I am overcome by the magic of Bengal. It's a feeling that'll never go away.

THESE DAYS OF SMS, EMAIL AND INTERNET. I TAKE THE AUDACITY OF WRITING LETTER . RECENTLY I VISITED MY CHOTOMESO WHO HAS LOST HIS WIFE ABOUT A YEAR BACK. SEEING HIS PATHERIC CONDITION I WAS REMINDED OF TUSHAR KAKA. HOW IS HE NOW! I WAS ALSO REMINDED OF A SITUETION ARUNA DEPARTS BEFORE ME . WHAT WOULD HAPPEN ARUNA CALLED ME SELFISH. RATHER THAN FALL IN A SITUATION WITHOUT ARUNA IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR ME TO COMMIT SUICIDE, BUT THEN I DIDN’T HAVE THE GUTS TO DO SO. I HAVE CHANGED MY PHYSIOTHERAPIST. BUT I NEED CONFIDENCE TO START WALKING AGAIN ON MY OWN FEETS. IN THE LAST ONE MONTH LILY HAD SPOKEN TO ME . জমজ দুই বোন আমার প্রীয় বান্ধবী। নাতী নাত্নী ঠাকুর দ্যাবতা নিয়ে তারা বিভোর। স্ব স্ব ক্ষেত্রে দিগ্বজ স্বামী রত্নরা চট করে পাত্তা পান না, এমনই তেনারা বলেন। এমত ব্যস্তসমস্ত বান্ধবীর কাছাকাছি পৌঁছতে পারলে কেমন যেন গদগদ হয়ে পরি। গাধা, ভোঁদা, হাঁদা, ন্যাকা ইত্যাদি অনেক আদরের নাম আছে আমার, ভালবেসে ডাকার। আমার প্রীয় বুদ্ধু নামটা ওনাদের মনেই পড়ে না। নাতী নাত্নীদের সঙ্গে ভাব জমাবার চেষ্টা করি। সাদাকালো চুল দাঁড়ি লোকটাকে তারা যদি বন্ধু করতে রাজি হয় তবেই কিছুক্ষণ ঠাকুমা/দিদিমার সঙ্গ পাই; নয়তো ‘দূর হ’।

মাদ্রাসি ফুলিস ঠ্যাঙ্গানি দ্যাসে ভিভেক ব্যাটাকে চেন্নাই সমুদ্রে ক্যাদ্দানি করার জন্য। অজ পারাগাঁতে শহর গড়েছে কোন এক ভোদী কম্পানি। টিনফি সেখেনে অনেক কম্পুটার বসিয়ে বিরাট অফিস করেছে। ভিভেক সেখেনে মাস মাইনের নতুন বন্ড দেয়া চাকর। আমেরিকান কম্পানি নাম টক্সিজেন্স ভারতে ব্যবসা ফেঁদেছে তারাও এখন রাজী ওকে কাজ দিতে মাস মাইনের। নিম্ন মধ্যবিত্তের মানুষের বন্ডকে ভয়, টিনফিতে বন্ড আছে; জেমস বন্ডকে ভালবাসে। বন্ড ফন্ডকে কেয়ার করে না উচ্চ বিত্তের/বৃত্যের লোকেরা। আমেরিকাতে সকলের লোভ, আমেরিকার চাকর হওয়ার সুযোগ, আহারে! তারা আবার কোলকাতাতে চাকর রাখবে। দেখা যাক কি করে ভিভেক।

Today is mahalaya, the beginning of "Debipokkho". And today i realised that i should voice my opinion regarding The Durga puja and a contradiction to the idea of worship of the powerful.
I never took to the idea of worshipping idols and practising the old habits and customs tht come with them. i always felt and still feel (if i think from the point of view of a theist) that the permanent practices through which people wish to communicate with god become more important than the real purpose and consequently people forget It. Building huge, expensive pandals, competiting for the prizes, satisfying the priests, offering lots of fruits and cloth to the goddess eventually make people forget the Cause behind them. To me, they are for show. i mean, if u spend the same amount of money on the same things and give them to the less privileged, u would be doing a better job than giving them to the goddess (who according to the theists have loads of the same). Ur god is not sitting with a scoreboard and keeping track of how much u spent on him!!!
I m not a theist. I rather find nature more fascinating and inspiring than idol worship. whenever i feel the need of help, i dont pray to an imaginary Someone who is going to listen to me. i have never been able to imagine a person like that!!! when i get scared and feel insecure, my mother's thoughts come into my mind and sometimes i try to find solutions on my own by learning from nature.and when both the tries fail, i cry. i cry blindly without being able to realise the environment or the people in front of me. 2 such cases happened during school and one of my friends have made a comment which is still ringing in my ears, "U can harvest ur tears!" Maybe, i m a crying baby to many but i wish they could understand how it feels like when u r falling down a mountain and there are no rocks to cling to...
Oops i am being too much sentimental, sorry for that!
As i was saying, the mediums overshadow the prayer. They say that god has created everything and i would say in other words that everything is made up of electrons protons and neutrons. whatever we do are results of millions of chemical reactions. i gave a deeper thought to the matter of idol worship and realised 2 things. our minds always hunt for a support who would solve our innumerable problems and care for us. since we all are humans and its hard to find such a person, we satisfy our minds by telling them that there is someone who would protect us and will punish the wrong doers. this gives us confidence and we get back our energy to struggle for existence. everyone of us do not have the same ability to imagine a shapeless, massless thing and believe it and hold on to it. so we make them take shapes of weird humans. in that way we can concentrate on that imagination more easily. we make ourselves believe that there exists the PERFECT. The customs and habits are nothing but spices over the raw food.
Getting back to Durga, i must confess that i hv very little knowledge about the Myth which i have acquired from the Mahalayas on TV and radio. but what i hv learnt is that Durga is a symbol of immense power and more importantly female power. In the male dominated society, the victory of the goddess and many other female deities works like an oxymoron. over the ages, powerful males have tortured the tender females and also have worked for their welfare. Today, in a world where many women have proved themselves to be equal and even better than the men,we get to read in the newspaper about the women being sold off, the numerous rapes and murders and many other shocking incidents. All this make me wonder, when the people after worshipping the Durga and repeatedly trying to prove themselves a loyal devotee of her, torture women do they not think even once how dangerously they are contradicting themselves? does not the idea tht the victims are also the same durga to whom they surrender themselves occur to them? i travel alone from the age of 12. i myself am a victim of countless eveteasings and obscene behaviour. at that moment i feel like screaming to their ears "U people are the mahisasurs that durga must kill, we must destroy." Mahisasur symbolises the evil which includes all these sinners who pretend to pray to durga bt actually insult her tremendously. Mahisasur lives in our minds and deeds. in today's world, many mahisasurs have contaminated the holy earth. and from whatever i have learnt from the Mahalaya, we have to be the Durga and fight them off. we have to stand united and create an immense power with which the evil shall perish and the earth will wake up into a better place.

Isolation.

At first this word creates a sense of fear in most us… an image of being utterly alone, deserted by all… lonely, helpless & desparate.

From my childhood I led a life where I always felt different. Most of the discussions and experiences than other people around me talked about with great enthusiasm, inevitably occurred as very shallow to me. I always searched for the root. For example, I really hated to use a derived equation of physics. I’d generally start from a basic principle and then derive the necessary equations that came in the path of solving a complex problem. As a result, the mathematics was always ‘unnecessarily’ lengthy, but there was a huge satisfaction in it! Even the layman would understand and could appreciate its beauty! I always believed in the Beauty of Simplicity, in an equation, in actions, in thoughts. On the other hand, a complex way of solving a problem inevitably would give birth to a set of more complex problems before reaching to a unstable solution!

To me ‘Isolation’ meant a state of self-discovery, a journey to the depths of the Actual Me. At a moment of time, our mind is so filled with thousands of other correlated/un-correlated thoughts that it remains impure for painting a new image that is completely detached from the external influences. I got accustomed to the loneliness (that everybody feels once in a while), but instead of getting desparate, I chose to reign over it!

I accepted and learned the fact that everybody is alone and always will be alone. The sense of ‘togetherness’ with people, with feelings, with all the tangible things is just an illusion that we ourselves create for a sense of security which acts as a skeleton support for us in dark times. Though sometimes the sudden feeling of ‘isolation’ creeps into us, we choose to abandon it, enveloping with that sense of security that we have carefully built for all these years of life. We always look for support, if somebody/something deserts us, after a hangover we let go off that and again search for another support. Its like a monkey jumping over from branch to another while traversing the forest of life!

As told before, I have a fascination for The Absolute, The Ultimate that cannot be derived, that is ever-static, that is time-less, that is beyond words, beyond feelings, beyond any form of expression… it can only be realised !

Only the gift of isolation has the potential which lays the ground for this Realisation. Yes, isolation is a Gift! Its not about just being isolated physically. We are humans, and no matter what, 75% of our actions are led by our emotions! Baseless, irrational and instinctive. This is what makes us human,a higher form of an animal, and not a machine. But at the same time it curtains what makes us a Human and not an animal! We are either too much of an animal or too much of a machine. But there is a very thin and subtle layer in between these two, and that’s what makes us Human.

In most of the religious scripts of all the religions in the world, humans are said to be descendants of the Gods! (And, I believe these scripts were not preached/written by ordinary men, but men of all-penetrating vision, men with a mind as tranquil as the waters of a Himalayan lake, men with a Will-Power like the blazing sun!) The only quality that makes us Humans are long lost in most of us. What really makes us different is that we can think about self-realisation. Compassion, love, generosity, jealousy, anger, lust … these are all common to animals. These do not exclusively define ‘Humanity’. Yes, humans have developed much higher stages of these states, but other animals have also some lower forms of these.

But, have you ever heard of a computer thinking “Who am I?” ? Or any other animal, plant (or whatever that has life) thinking “Who am I? What are we here for?” Yes, its only this quality that makes humans different from any other species. We have the gift of knowledge-thirst to build its path. But we use our knowledge to build things that are so temporary and even use the same knowledge to destroy things that are so beautiful!

Let’s rise over all things that makes us bound to a life like animals. Let’s empower ourselves with the knowledge that pervades all boundaries of space-time. Let’s be free from all the pain. Its time that we stop fearing ‘isolation’ and embrace the Infinity.

Let us all bathe and bask in the bliss of true Humanity!

Three professors (a physicist, a chemist, and a statistician) are called in to see their dean. Just as they arrive the dean is called out of his office, leaving the three professors there. The professors see with alarm that there is a fire in the wastebasket.
The physicist says,
- "I know what to do! We must cool down the materials until their temperature is lower than the ignition temperature and then the fire will go out."
The chemist says,
- "No! No! I know what to do! We must cut off the supply of oxygen so that the fire will go out due to lack of one of the reactants."
While the physicist and chemist debate what course to take, they both are alarmed to see the statistician running around the room starting other fires. They both scream,
- "What are you doing?"

- "Trying to get an adequate sample size."

There was this statistics student who, when driving his car, would always accelerate hard before coming to any junction, whizz straight over it, then slow down again once he'd got over it. One day, he took a passenger, who was understandably unnerved by his driving style, and asked him why he went so fast over junctions. The statistics student replied,

I was walking across the empty streets. the houses were standing on both sides of the streets like silent witnesses to my walk. i did not take any turn, i just went straight ahead. suddenly i cam e to a dead end. when i turned back i couldn't recognize the streets. a shadow was gliding towards me. m any other shadows joined it. i got scared but couldn't run away. they were only a few feet away from me w hen i realized that their faces were those of my close ones. i asked them,
'What made u like this?". they answered, "Expectations." "what were u expecting?", i was curious. "we don't remember"was the answer that was ringing in my ears when i kept standing there listening to the silence.
